transgender psychologists

Providing therapy for transgender individuals and their families has been a great privilege. Serious symptoms associated with transgender dysphoria may include severe depression, self-harm behaviors, and suicide attempts. The impact of witnessing the relief and, at times, the euphoria that may take place when the individual finally makes their first consultation appointment to start hormone therapy, is impactful to witness as a therapist.
Counseling the family through the many stages of loss they may experience along with anger, frustration, and disbelief is a critical factor in assisting the individual towards attaining a successful and healthy transition.

My background and training as an Art Therapist was a major determinant in my decision to become a Psychologist and Psychoanalyst. I was enthralled by the power, curative possibilities and revealing nature in the creative process. As a result, my area of particular interest is in working with artists, writers, photographers and individuals in the theater and music industry. I am an interactive therapist with extensive postgraduate training. When possible, I use humor in our sessions, pretty well I am told, a bit of sarcasm now and then as well!
Whether psychotherapy or psychoanalysis is the chosen technique that we utilize, dreams, poems, artwork, music composition and journals are used as additional sources to assist in our gaining a deeper understanding of the unconscious. Freud believed, as do I, that the roots of conflict lie in our unconscious. Here is where insight begins.
My suggestion to individuals who are seeking therapy is to meet with several therapists until it feels like a good fit. The training and years of experience of the clinician, although critically important, is but one determinant in your search.
